Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

The Division of Cardiology at Cornell offers an advanced training fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The cardiac catheterization laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College is currently comprised of five full time interventional cardiology faculty members and the laboratory performs nearly 6500 total cases and 1900 percutaneous coronary interventions annually. The cardiac catheterization service maintains a high volume of procedural and clinical practice utilizing a team consisting of faculty attendings, a nurse practitioner service, clinical fellows, interventional cardiology fellows, dedicated nurses, technologists, angioplasty specialists and research support staff.

The fellowship consists of one year devoted to intensive training in all aspects of interventional cardiology. Interventional cardiology fellows will be trained to perform percutaneous coronary interventions utilizing all currently available technologies including drug eluting stents, rotational atherectomy, thrombectomy devices, distal protection devices and intravascular ultrasound. The program places a heavy emphasis on a systematic, evidence-based approach to diagnostic and therapeutic coronary procedures. All fellows will have the opportunity to be proficient at the end of training in diagnostic angiography, pericardiocentesis, hemodynamic evaluation of patients and the use of a variety of closure devices. Each fellow will also have exposure to peripheral interventions, the treatment of patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect, alcohol septal ablation as well as therapeutic options for the treatment of valvular heart disease. As an adjunct to the clinical interventional cardiology fellowship, a didactic core curriculum has been developed for the program along with opportunities to gain additional training using a simulator based teaching tool for all currently available procedures.

Rotations: The program stresses development in all areas of interventional cardiology as each fellow has ample time to develop expertise in pre-procedural as well as post-procedural management of the patient both in the in-patient and out-patient setting. The core of the fellowship consists of specific rotations including the Interventional Cardiology Laboratory with the opportunity to perform many procedures utilizing a number of standard and new technologies.

Research: The laboratory has active clinical research programs. Fellows are expected to participate in projects with the goal of presenting at national meetings and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Clinical research projects include both prospective (either single-center or multi-center) device and pharmacologic clinical studies and retrospective single-center studies from our own cardiac catheterization laboratory database or multi-center database and from the New York State Angioplasty Registry. Any unresolved issues in interventional cardiology can be addressed with this database. Interventional fellows are welcome to join any of these efforts.
