Brooklyn Hospital Center/Weill Cornell Combined Cardiology Fellowship

The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a 653-bed full-service hospital located in downtown Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Hospital Center, under the auspices of the Weill-Cornell Cardiology, has a separate fellowship program. Brooklyn Hospital fellows rotate through cardiology services at the Weill-Cornell/New York Presbyterian Hospital campus for approximately 6 months per year.

The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory currently performs approximately 1,000 diagnostic procedures annually. Patients requiring PTCA and electrophysiologic procedures are generally transferred to Weill Cornell. The Echocardiography Laboratory performs 3,000-4,000 procedures yearly, including TEE and stress Echo. Nuclear Cardiology, part of the Cardiology Division, performs about 20 procedures a week, particularly exercise and pharmacologic imaging, and viability studies.

Rotations at Brooklyn include:

• CCU/Consultation
• Non-invasive (Echo, Nuclear, Graphics)
• Catheterization Lab

Rotations at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell include:

• Catheterization Laboratory/PTCA
• Electrophysiology
• Echocardiography
• Consultation Service including post-cardiac surgical care
• Other elective rotations

Salaries are competitive and, although Hospital housing is not available, rents in Brooklyn are far below those in Manhattan. Fellows have no difficulty living within walking distance of Brooklyn Hospital Center. Public transportation in downtown Brooklyn is superb, including a subway station 2 blocks from the Hospital with travel time to Weill-Cornell about 30-40 minutes, including rush hour. There is also an institutional van which shuttles between Brooklyn Hospital Center and Weill Cornell. All evening call is at Brooklyn and is "beeper call" at home (obviously fellows need to live close to the Hospital); rotations at Weill Cornell are coordinated so that fellows can return to Brooklyn in time for sign-out.
