CEDREC's Community Engagement Core

Walid Michelen, MD, Director
Kathleen Nokes, PhD, RN, FAAN Co-Director
Erica Phillips-Caesar, MD Co-Director

The mission of the Community Engagement and Outreach (CEOC) is to provide the infrastructure for improving the health of the community through sustained and expanded community partnerships. The CEOC will give the community a voice in the research conducted in its neighborhoods and facilitate the development of community outreach initiatives. By integrating research into the community, the CEOC will strengthen the research capacity at the community level and enhance enrollment in clinical trials. The initial focus of activities supported by CEDREC will be targeted toward improving health outcomes among Blacks and Latinos residing in Central Harlem and the South Bronx. The lessons learned from this initial funding will be used to develop culturally tailored interventions that are appropriate for the needs of other racial and ethnic groups in New York City.

One of the initial research projects that the Community Engagement Core is currently conducting is:

Small Changes and Lasting Effects (SCALES)

PI: Mary Charlson, MD,
Project director: Erica Phillips-Caesar, MD, MS

This randomized controlled trial is aimed to develop effective behavioral interventions, along with mindful eating strategies, among overweight/obese Black or Latino adults who live in Harlem or the South Bronx.

Lincoln Center & Community Collaborative Research (LCCCR)

Dr. Balavenkatesh Kanna, Dr. Walid Michelen, and Jennifer Melendez

This academic and community based group promotes participatory research with the goal of improving the health of minority communities and expand community partnerships within the South Bronx. The LCCCR will identify and collaborate with community partners to conduct educational programs targeted at improving community knowledge and awareness of various health issues. The members of the LCCCR include For a Better Bronx, Bronx Health Links, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Lincoln Hospital, and Weill Cornell Medical College.
