At Annual Awards Dinner Internal Medicine Residency Program Announces Honors

On June 7, 2012, the Internal Medicine Residency program celebrated the 2012 class of graduating residents at its annual banquet. Dr. Lia Logio, Vice Chair for Education and Residency Director, announced several awards for faculty and housestaff. Honored at the event were Dr. James Horowitz, outgoing Chief Resident, and Dr. Laura Fanucchi, outgoing Quality Improvement Chief Resident.

A highlight of the evening was the special recognition of the faculty. The Housestaff selected a number of faculty members to be recipients of Teaching Awards. Dr. Logio noted that "these individuals deserve the accolades for their very visible and valuable contribution to the residency program." The award recipients were:

Consultant Attending of the Year Dr. Dana Zappetti
WCIMA Attending of the Year Dr. Byron Demopoulos
Hospital Medicine Attending of the Year Dr. Sal Cilmi
Critical Care Attending of the Year Dr. David Berlin
The Irwin Nydick Voluntary Attending of the Year Dr. Barry Hartman
The J. James Smith Memorial Award Dr. Anthony Ogedegbe
Of special note, a new NYP-sponsored award was given to outgoing Chief Resident, Dr. James Horowitz. Dr. Horowitz demonstrated "a collaborative patient-centered approach to patient care on the Weill Cornell campus." Going forward, this award will be given to any chief from any department who demonstrates these shared values. The winner receives $1,000.

Dr. Logio noted that the contributions of residents, fellows, and faculty made for a very successful year for education in the Department, and thanked all for their generous gift of time and talent in teaching during 2011-2012.
