Nephrology & Hypertension

Information for Fellowship Applicants

Dear Fellowship Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the Nephrology Fellowship Program at the NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Our program is a two-year ACGME approved training program. Trainees develop a full range of cognitive and technical skills that are required for the successful practice of Nephrology and for board certification. This is accomplished through practical experience and through didactic sessions covering every aspect of Nephrology. The renal fellows have rotations on the consultation service, transplant service, ambulatory hypertension service, and acute hemodialysis service at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Campus, chronic hemodialysis and ambulatory services at The Rogosin Institute, and consultation service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Transplantation is an important facet of the fellowship. We offer one of the few programs in the country where the fellows have direct supervised care of transplant patients. The world renowned Weill Cornell Hypertension Division merged several years ago with the Nephrology Division and fellows now have the opportunity to participate in the care of complicated patients with both primary and secondary hypertension. Our dialysis unit, adjacent to the hospital, is one of the largest in New York City, and treats 260 maintenance hemodialysis patients and 40 peritoneal dialysis patients. We have an extensive conference schedule which includes a weekly biopsy conference, journal club, lecture series, in-patient review, and consultation rounds.

Fellows have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of research opportunities in transplantation biology, islet cell transplantation, hypertension, renal physiology, and dialysis. We have expertise at our Center in many areas of Nephrology ranging from basic physiology and cell biology to metabolic bone disease, kidney stones, obstetric nephrology, and extracorporeal therapy including dialysis and apheresis.

We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Completed applications consist of all required fields in the ERAS Application including:
• Curriculum Vitae
• 3 Letters of Recommendation, including one from your program director
• USMLE scores [for foreign medical school graduates]
• ECFMG certificate [for foreign medical school graduates]
• Photos are optional, but appreciated

Applications will be available to us on July 1st. Frances Gillen, Nephrology Fellowship Administrator, will contact selected candidates for interviews. She will arrange for you to visit our campus where you will have the opportunity to meet Division faculty members and fellows, who can discuss the program with you. If you are interested in pursuing this fascinating and challenging subspecialty in an intellectually stimulating environment, we are interested in hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Phyllis August, MD, MPH
