Sleep Bruxism and Central Sensitization in Myofascial Face Pain

Study Status

Closed to Enrollment

Study Description

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the presence of sleep-related bruxism (teeth grinding) in patients with myofascial face pain. Patients recruited for this study undergo a battery of tests to evaluate the potential underlying mechanism for their face pain under the guidance of the Project’s Principal Investigator (Karen Raphael, PhD), followed by an overnight sleep study to assess the presence of bruxism while qualifying and quantifying facial movements. Dr. Krieger oversees the scoring of overnight polysomnograms (sleep studies) according to strict criteria for determining the presence and severity of sleep bruxism. The scoring of the existing studies are performed by a trained sleep technician at an outside facility.
