Study Status
Open to Enrollment
Study Description
This study is recruiting healthy smokers and smokers with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) to learn more about the effects of smoking on lung disease and the genetic precursors to lung disease. There are two study groups.
Group 1: Smokers Diagnosed with COPD
We are seeking smokers who have been diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) to participate in a paid research study. Participants will be part of the study looking for genetic precursors to lung disease.
Compensation:
- $50 for a free lung health examination consisting of a physical exam, electrocardiogram (EKG), blood and urine tests, a breathing test and a chest X-ray
- Eligible volunteers also receive $200 for a bronchoscopy procedure
Group 2: Healthy Smokers
We are seeking smokers, age 18 or older, to participate in a paid research study looking at the effects of smoking on lung disease.
Compensation:
- $50 compensation for a free, 3 to 4 hour lung health examination consisting of a physical exam, electrocardiogram (EKG), blood and urine tests, a breathing test and a chest X-ray
- Eligibile volunteers will also receive $200 for a 3 to 4 hour bronchoscopy procedure
Eligibile volunteers can also participate in a year long study consisting of 8 additional visits:
- 3 lung health examinations, including physical exam, electrocardiogram (EKG), blood and urine tests, chest X-ray and a breathing test
- Bronchoscopy procedures last 3 to 4 hours each
- 5 visits to provide routine blood and urine tests lasting 30 minutes each
Compensation:
- Month 3 examination and bronchoscopy: $350
- Month 6 examination and bronchoscopy: $350
- Month 12 examination and bronchoscopy: $350
- Study completion bonus: $500
