Evaluation of the Lungs of Normal (Smokers, Ex-smokers, Non-Smokers) Individuals with Segmental Bronchopulmonary Lung Lavage, Bronchial Brushing, and Bronchial Wall Biopsy

Study Description

The purpose of this study is to obtain samples from the blood and lungs of healthy people to look for precursors to lung disease.

There are two study groups for people age 18 and older:

Group 1: People who smoke Hookah (Shisha)

If you are a hookah smoker, you may qualify for this study looking at the effects that hookah may have on the lung cells. Eligibile participants can earn up to $250 upon completion of the following study visits:

  • Screening visit, including medical history, physical exam, blood and urine tests, Electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-ray and a breathing test (duration approximately five hours: $50 compensation
  • Study visit, including bronchoscopy procedure: $200 compensation

Group 2: Healthy/normal Smokers and non-Smokers

Healthy smokers and non-smokers are needed for this study looking for precursers to lung disease. Eligibile participants can earn up to $250 upon completion of the following study visits:

  • Screening visit, including medical history, physical exam, blood and urine tests, Electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-ray and a breathing test (duration approximately five hours: $50 compensation
  • Study visit, including bronchoscopy procedure: $200 compensation
