American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Annual Meeting, October 29 - November 2, 2010

Attending AASLD's annual Liver Meeting in Boston this year was a great experience as this was my first national conference. I was fortunate enough to work on a year-long project with a talented team of two other Department of Medicine residents under the direction of our third-year GI fellow who is now an attending. At the conference I had the opportunity to share our project with hepatologists and scientists and exchange our findings with other residents and researchers who conducted projects in the same area. A common complication of liver transplant, after graft rejection and sepsis, is a cardiac event. However, current cardiac risk stratifying tools have not been shown to accurately predict cardiac events post-transplant in liver transplant candidates. It was interesting to discuss with other researchers what they thought about this problem and how they proposed to come up with a cardiac risk stratification model for this population. Our GI fellow (now attending) gave an oral presentation on our findings that was well received by the audience.
