Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics - September 21-25, 2010

Representing NYPH/WCMC at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference was a great experience. Along with my own poster in the field of cardiology, I also took posters from two of our recent graduates, Subhi Al Aref and Laura Hofmann. My presentation was seen by many conference attendees, including from the Mayo Clinic. The breakout sessions covered so many exciting areas: management of patients requiring PCI (at increased risk for and/or known renal disease); PPIs in individuals on dual-antiplatelet therapy (clopidigrel, therapeutic hypothermia); determination of PCI with an out-of-hospital arrest of unknown origin; and management of DAPT in patients needing surgery or endoscopy. Other presentations in the field included trials (e.g., PARTNER) and it was very exciting to observe "live case demonstrations." I also heard about "new frontiers" in interventional cardiology (e.g., treating hypertension ((manipulation of the carotid baroreceptors and denervation of the kidneys - very sci-fi sounding)), treating erectile dysfunction ((stenting the internal pudendal artery!)), and sub-cutaneous AICDs). This type of activity increases our enthusiasm for research.
