General Internal Medicine

Information for Fellowship Applicants

Dear Fellowship Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the fellowship program in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. The program is open to physicians who have completed an accredited residency-training program in any clinical area. The program is open to United States Citizens and non-citizen nationals of the United States. Applicants should be committed to pursuing a research career. We encourage physicians from a broad spectrum of cultural backgrounds to apply.

The Division offers six positions each year. Of our former fellows, 80% are faculty in academic centers, including Weill-Cornell, Columbia, Vanderbilt, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Albert Einstein, and Mount Sinai. They serve as principal investigators on 32 grants and co-investigators on 33 grants, which have received a cumulative funding of $33,947,382. Of our 27 past and current fellows, 30% are African-American; all are currently in academic positions. This program has an excellent track record of training physician-investigators, especially minority investigators, who go on to successful peer-review funded research careers.

This two-year fellowship program, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, is directed by Mary E. Charlson, MD and co-directed by Carol A. Mancuso, MD. It is open to physicians from any field who have completed their residencies and who are interested in an academic career in health services research, clinical epidemiology, or health policy. It is designed to give physicians the skills necessary to conduct methodologically rigorous health services research that will enable them to develop and implement solutions to the nation’s pressing health care problems.

Fellows will have access to faculty with a broad range of expertise including clinical epidemiology, health services research, health economics, health services administration, biostatistics, health policy, health promotion and disease prevention, behavioral science and health education, and medical informatics. With the active support of faculty mentors, fellows design, perform, and present an independent research project in their area of interest.

Possible Research Areas include:
• Behavioral Science
• Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
• Biostatistics
• Clinical Epidemiology
• Health Education
• Management and Finance
• Medical Informatics
• Decision Analysis
• Health Services Research
• Health Policy and Economics
• Medical Ethics

Fellows will attend at least one national conference per year pertaining to their project area, and will be given multiple opportunities to present their work during the fellowship. Fellows will be enrolled in the Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University to obtain a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research. Upon acceptance into the fellowship program, fellows are asked to complete the Master of Science program application. Courses are taught by a multi-disciplinary group of faculty who are noted for their scholarly achievements and leadership. Fellows will be trained to plan, implement, and analyze quantitative and qualitative research studies using appropriate research designs. They will be prepared to work effectively in a variety of settings where data is required to answer complex questions and assess outcomes.
