Clinical Pharmacology
Welcome to the Division of Clinical Pharmacology where we seek to improve the use of medications in therapeutics and to provide consultative medical care for patients who have problems with medications. The origins of modern clinical pharmacology go back in Cornell's history to 1937 when Dr. Harry Gold started the Cornell Conferences on Therapy and to Dr. Walter Modell, who founded the first and principal journal of the discipline, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in 1960. Our division's activities have led to improvements in therapeutics through research, teaching, and patient care. The current focus of the Division is to identify the reasons why some people respond or react differently to a medication from the majority of people who take the same medication. Gaining this information in ways that can be used to individualize drug therapy is the research focus of the Division. We use this information in consultations with patients, who have had inappropriate responses to medications, in order to help them individualize their therapy.
