Infectious Diseases Education

The educational mission of the Division is to foster clinical and academic excellence. Our programs offer students and fellows unique and diversified experiences that prepare them for careers in academia, research and patient care.

The Fellowship in Infectious Diseases provides excellent training through a broad curriculum. Graduates of the program are highly qualified for the practice of infectious diseases, bench and clinical research, and for leadership roles in medicine. The fellowship training program places major emphasis in both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. All fellows rotate through the hospital epidemiology department and clinical microbiology laboratory. Infectious disease fellows have continuity clinics in the Center for Special Studies which provides care to about 2,000 HIV-infected patients. In addition, they have a general infectious diseases out-patient clinic. They also see patients at The International Health Care Service which serves over 3,000 travelers annually and offers a unique opportunity to become familiar with a variety of infectious and tropical diseases. Clinical research opportunities are available in our AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and in our International Health Care Service. Fellows have rotations on the consultation service at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Campus, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

The Division's comprehensive clinical education and research programs in Haiti and Brazil are longstanding. The newest interdepartmental program opened in affiliation with the Bugando Medical Center (BMC) and the Weill Bugando University College of Health Sciences (BUCHS) in Mwanza, Tanzania. Participation in these programs by Residents and Fellows is encouraged and can be either short or long-term.

Medical Student education is another important component of our overall mission. We sponsor a four week elective course to provide students with an intensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in hospitalized patients. Students, under the guidance of the infectious disease fellows and attending staff, work up infectious disease consultations and assist in the management of patients.
