Breast Cancer Research Group Presents Work in San Antonio
The Breast Cancer Research Group recently presented their research at The San Antonio Breast Cancer meeting, which is the preeminent breast cancer meeting in the world. At this global meeting of breast cancer researchers, which took place December 10-14, researchers tackled everything in breast cancer, from risk factor for the development of breast cancer to surgery and new treatments, as well as survivorship issues. The group presented four posters this year at the 2008 meeting. They represent their commitment to the NY Cancer Consortium, the development of new drugs, as well as an innovative home-grown way to prevent metastases.
Tribute to Ralph Nachman, MD
Dr. Ralph Nachman served as the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell from 1990 to 2007 and is the Lewis Thomas University Professor of Medicine and the Associate Dean for Clinical Research. To honor his remarkable career, the department, on behalf of its Chairman Dr. Andrew I. Schafer, assembled a scientific tribute to its former chief, held on Nov. 20 in Uris Auditorium.

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension and Department of Transplantation Medicine Present at International Congress of the Transplantation Society
In recognition of his contributions to the transplant community, Manikkam Suthanthiran, MB, Chief of the Department of Transplantation Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Weill Cornell Medical College, accepted the invitation to chair a scientific session at the XXII International Congress of the Transplantation Society, entitled "Genomics and Molecular Diagnostics." Dr. Suthanthiran also co-chaired a session entitled "mTOR-Inhibition — The Science and the Clinical Outcomes."

Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates a Major Site for ACCORD Study
Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates (WCIMA) was a major site for the ACCORD study, an NIH-sponsored clinical trial spanning 10 years that investigated the aggressive management of diabetes. The WCIMA site for the trial recruited over 80 patients into the study. This study is pivotal in our emerging understanding of the management of type 2 diabetes.
Amanda Carmel, MD, Assistant Attending Physician and Instructor in Medicine, has received a prestigious grant from the New York Academy of Medicine to investigate issues in osteoporosis management in ambulatory care. This is a two-year grant beginning in July 2008. Congratulations, Dr. Carmel!
