Dr. Silver Honored with European Lecture Invitation

Dr. Silver Dr. Richard T. Silver was an invited lecturer at the "Leukemia and Lymphoma: East and West are Together" Conference sponsored by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia from September 16-21. He spoke about the treatment of polycythemia vera with interferon. He also participated in the European School of Hematology Congress on Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Lisbon, Portugal, held from September 22-25.

Congrats to Dr. Linnie Golightly in the Division of Infectious Diseases!

Dr. Linnie Dr. Linnie Golightly successfully competed for an R01 Grant, entitled "Endothelial Progenitor cells and the Pathogenesis of Cerebral Malaria" and also secured funding through the Gates Challenge Grants with Alberto Bilenca at the Ben-Gurion University in Israel and John March at Cornell in Ithaca to develop a point-of-care test of malaria by a cell phone imaging probe and a novel cholera vaccine based upon in vivo bacterial communication pathways.

Dr. Anne Moore Receives Maurice R. Greenberg Distinguished Service Award: Celebration at the St. Regis

Dr. group Beloved by patients, colleagues, and friends alike, Dr. Anne Moore has long been recognized for her pioneering career and her devotion to patient care in the field of breast cancer. She was honored on June 1, 2011 with the Maurice R. Greenberg Distinguished Service Award. A celebratory dinner was held at the St. Regis Hotel where, along with her family and friends, she received a standing ovation. As noted in the July 2011 edition of NY Press, Mr. Greenberg provided a generous endowment in 1981 to pay tribute to NYP/Weill Cornell physicians' extraordinary clinical and scientific accomplishments.

Congrats to Pioneers of Novel Master's Program in Global Health: Graduate Wins First Prize at DOM Investigator Award Event

Dr. group Dr. Jennifer Downs was one of the "first" of four to graduate from a novel Global Health Track of the Master's of Science Degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research. This program is a proactive collaboration between the Department of Medicine's Division of Clinical Epidemiology and Evaluative Sciences Research and the Center for Global Health in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Downs' thesis, a research study targeted to women in Tanzania of reproductive age who have schistosomiasis, was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (March 2011). She received First Prize for this work at the 20th Annual Department of Medicine Investigator Award event (sponsored by The Michael Wolk Heart Foundation) on May 24, 2011. Schistosomiasis, caused by a parasitic worm and contracted via infected water, is one of the world's most socioeconomically devastating diseases. More

The Second Mark Pecker Clinical Master Visiting Professor: Dr. Daniel Goodenberger

The second Mark Pecker Clinical Master Visiting Professorship was held May 1 through May 5. Dr. Daniel Goodenberger, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, an expert in pulmonology and internal medicine, was the guest of honor. He attended rounds, morning report, and conferences. A reception was held in Griffis Faculty Club, where he met with colleagues and residents.

Dr. Talal Joins CDC Advisory Group on HCV Guidelines

Dr. group Andrew H. Talal, MD, MPH, Associate Professor, has been invited to join the CDC's Division of Viral Hepatitis in an external advisory group examining current guidelines for hepatitis C testing. Specifically, the group is analyzing whether to recommend HCV testing for people born between 1945 and 1965. More

Dr. Moore Honored with NYAM Award

Anne Moore, MD, Medical Director, Weill Cornell Breast Center, will be honored by The New York Academy of Medicine with the 2011 Academy Plaque for Exceptional Service to the Academy. A 35-year WCMC physician, Dr. Moore specializes in breast cancer research and treatment. The award ceremony will be held in NYC on November 9. More

Global Health Center Receives $560K Grant from Mulago Foundation

Dr. Rhee Receives Two Grants from Gates Foundation

Dr. group A graduate of Cornell University, Kyu Y. Rhee, MD, PhD is one of only nine grantees to receive further funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Exploration Program. Dr. Carl Nathan was another of these nine grantees to receive follow-on funding. In addition, each received a second grant through the TB Drug Accelerator Program (two of only seven), an independent program that is part of the larger Gates Grand Challenges initiative. More

A Banner Year for the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension

Dr. group It was a banner year for the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, having received awards and delivered lectures at numerous national and international meetings. The division, Department of Medicine and Department of Transplantation Medicine were well represented at the American Transplant Congress, the International Congress of the Transplantation Society, the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics and the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Manikkam Suthanthiran is the Division Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension; Chief of the Department of Transplantation Medicine and Extracorporeal Therapy; and the Stanton Griffis Distinguished Professor of Medicine.
