Department of Medicine Investigator Award 2009

This award is presented annually to members of the Department of Medicine below the rank of professor who perform on outstanding levels in the areas of clinical and/or basic biomedical research. The award has been generously supported by the Michael Wolk Foundation.

Department of Medicine Fellows Award 2009

Initiated in 2002, this award is presented annually to fellows within the Department of Medicine who have presented outstanding research.

David E. Rogers Memorial Research Award 2009

Established in 1995, the David E. Rogers Memorial Research Award encourages medical residents to continue their investigative research in internal medicine. Each year, senior medical residents submit research abstracts, and four finalists are chosen to present their work during medical grand rounds.

In keeping with our tradition of excellence in education, the Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the following Teaching Awards presented to our faculty, fellows, and residents at the 2009 Convocation Ceremony.

ACGME Accredits Residency Program With Commendation

The Department of Medicine was notified on December 5, 2009 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that its Residency Review Committee (RRC) for Internal Medicine has given our medicine residency program full accreditation with commendation, and found no citations. This gratifying and unusual decision is a tribute to the hard work of our program directors, faculty and residents.

$2 Million National Institute on Aging Grant Funds Pain Management for NYC Seniors

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has awarded Weill Cornell Medical College a $2 million grant to fund an Edward R. Roybal Center for Research on Applied Gerontology, one of 12 such centers nationally.


Battling Cancer With Engineering: NCI Funds New $13 Million Microenvironment and Metastasis Research Center at Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medical College

Adding potent research firepower and fresh physical perspectives to combat cancer, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has funded the new Center on the Microenvironment and Metastasis, which will be headquartered at Cornell University. It is one of 12 new research centers across the nation recently announced by the NCI. This grant is for $13 million over five years.

Dr. Warren Johnson, Jr. to receive the 2009 Society Citation Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America

Dr. Warren Johnson, of the Division of Infectious Diseases, was selected by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (ISDA) to receive the 2009 Society Citation Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions in infectious diseases and his commitment to the field. The award will be presented during the upcoming IDSA meeting in Philadelphia.

Joseph J. Fins, MD. Elected President-Elect of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph J. Fins has been elected President-Elect of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH). Dr. Fins is Chief of the Division of Medical Ethics and Professor of Medicine, Professor of Public Health and Professor of Medicine in Psychiatry. He is also Director of Medical Ethics at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. Jeremy Sperling Receives National Faculty Teaching Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce the names of our faculty who were recipients of the Excellence in Teaching Awards for 2009.

Dr. Ari Melnick receives Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Borroughs Wellcome Foundation (BWF)

Dr. Ari Melnick is the receipient of a Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Borroughs Wellcome Foundation (BWF), which will provide $750,000 over a period of five years ($150,000 per year). Dr. Melnick's award is one of four conferred by BWF in 2009.

Yoon Kang, M.D. appointed the Richard P. Cohen, M.D. Assistant Professor of Medical Education

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Yoon Kang, M.D. of Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates (WCIMA) has been appointed as the first Richard P. Cohen, M.D. Assistant Professor of Medical Education, effective May 1, 2009.

Dr. Benjamin Levy named Recipient of a 2009 ASCO Young Investigator Award

Benjamin Levy, MD, of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, was selected as one of the 2009 recipients of the Young Investigators Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for his study, "Biomarker Analysis of Circulating Tumor Cells in Prostate Cancer: Predicting Response to Taxanes: A Pilot Study".

David Nanus, M.D. receives Creativity Award from the Prostate Cancer Foundation

Dr. David Nanus was awarded $100,000 from the Prostate Cancer Foundation to support his research program titled "PSMA-based Microfluidics-Capture of Circulating Prostate Cancer Cells: Study of Microtubule-driven Androgen Receptor Signaling, Gene Fusion, and Gene Expression Profiles with Correlation to Clinical Response to Taxane Therapy".

Drs. Leonard and Melnick elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI)

Drs. John Leonard and Ari Melnick of the Division of Hematology/Oncology were two of only 79 new members recently elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). They will be inducted into the organization at the Annual joint meeting of the ASCI in Chicago on April 24th-26th, 2009.

Elizabeth Jacobson, M.D. Appointed as the Bonnie Johnson Sacerdote Clinical Scholar in Women's Health.

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Jacobson, M.D. of the Division of Women's Health, has been appointed as the Bonnie Johnson Sacerdote Clinical Scholar in Women's Health for a three-year period, effective February 1, 2009 through January 31, 2012. Her selection for this endowed professorship is in recognition of her contributions as a clinician and educator in the field of Women's Health. This honor was conferred to Dr. Jacobson by the Executive Committee of the Board of Overseers of Weill Cornell Medical College and the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences.

John Leonard, M.D. Awarded One-Year Grant from Genentech

John Leonard, M.D., Associate Director of Clinical Research for the Weill Cornell Cancer Center, was awarded a one-year grant from Genentech to support the development of a Tissue Procurement Core, as part of the newly established Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College. The grant funding will initiate the development of this core resource, which is a critical aspect of high-quality translational cancer studies.

Dr. Scott Tagawa receives Clinical Trial Award from the U.S. Department of Defense

Dr. Scott Tagawa of the Division of Hematology/Oncology, has received a Clinical Trial Award from the U.S. Department of Defense, as part of its Prostate Cancer Research Program. The grant, in the amount of $750,000, will fund a multi-center clinical trial focusing on targeted radiotherapy in Prostate Cancer over the course of three years.

Sharon Midoneck, M.D. appointed as the Ehrenkranz Family - Orli R. Etingen, M.D., Professorship in Women's Health

The Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Sharon Midoneck, M.D. of the Division of Women's Health, has been appointed as the first holder of the Ehrenkranz Family - Orli R. Etingin, M.D., Professorship in Women's Health, effective January 1, 2009.
